Coyote: animated video by Christiane Cegavske

Coyote, a sorrowful (and romantic) stop-action film, is the newest animated work by Christiane Cegavske (creator of Blood Tea and Red String, which if you haven't seen it is one of the most amazing full length stop-action films ever). Music: Mark Growden's song Coyote; words by Deke Weaver. Christiane also has paintings and artwork available in her Etsy shop.

Launch Music Conference 2010: PA

LAUNCH exposes national and regional artists from a wide variety of backgrounds and genres to the music community which has prospered in and around Lancaster, PA for decades. The panels, showcases, and concerts offer guidance, exposure, and expertise for anyone with a career in the music industry.

Lindsey Meyers Interview

Lindsey Meyers is a photographer & mixed media artist. Her work can been seen in the cutting edge publication RAW 2008 and is featured on www.saddercity.com. She'll be showing monthly at the Flat Iron Arts Building in Wicker Park, Chicago as part of the Flat Iron Artists' Association's "First Friday" and smart Show series. Laura Prieto-Velasco

Laura Prieto-Velasco has been working as a metalsmith for the past 10 years. Originally from Philadelphia, she spent some time in California, and is now trying on the Midwest for size. Laura's been focusing on jewlery/sculpture/installation) and living in Chicago (the Bucktown/Wicker Park area). Back in CA, Laura worked part-time as a 60's go-go dancer for "Rewind" and "Orange Kiss," but these days she's turned her attentions to learning how to flamenco dance and she's currently working at the Art Institute of Chicago as a Light Metals Technician for the Sculpture Department. She has taught workshops on a variety of topics such as casting natural materials and 3-D digital media. [Read more here.]

James Swanson is an artist from Chicago who has been working on a project with friends and strangers from around the world. His friends (both new and old) do the traveling and James paints and blogs about their travels. NEXUS/foundation for today's art

NEXUS is pleased to present the work of new members Janell Olah, Damon Reaves, Kathryn TeBordo and Anastasia m.w. This new batch of artists from across the creative spectrum, expands the boundaries of experimental art and challenges easy categorization with work in installation, animation, performance, dance and dialog.

November 12—December 4, 2009
Opening Reception Thursday November 12, 6—9 pm

Installation artist Janell Olah's work explores place and circumstance through inherent and created systems.

Damon Reaves draws on a background in theatre and explores the ways in which we "perform" who we are.

Rather than making artifacts of current short works for ongoing display, Kathryn TeBordo will present work in a periodic performance and discussion series at NEXUS, developing a larger conversation about dance and performance art.

Anastasia's m. w.'s animated works explore different moments in life; focusing on individual vs. common, partiality vs. unity.

Each evening presents the same fresh material developed during the company's recent intensive at The Festival Studio, and is followed by a different conversation led by humanities experts and experimental artists across disciplines.

From the calibrated procedures of SUPERROGER, to the layers of memory and presence in THE SCORE OF THE FORGOTTEN DANCE, and the ditty to Passion Pit's "Little Secrets" that hints at Busby Berkeley style fantasias, these new works offer a lot of surprises for the most adventurous lovers of tiny, fans of Workshop for Potential Movement, and experimental artists looking for fresh blood.

Philadelphia-based art choreographer Jen McGinn tackles Les Sylphides in its centennial year. Watch as she expertly wrangles seven renegade dancers into the ballet's archetypal structure. Against a backdrop of iconic 1950's pop-rock, McGinn re-imagines the first major "plotless" ballet to help you consider your own lust for timelessness and uniformity. Michael Brucks Interview

Michael Brucks is a 34-year-old artist from Chicago who, for the past year, has generated over 1,000 of his unique, origami-like sculptures. Brucks says they are a tribute to many of his favorite childhood icons. He names Darth Vader, Lo Pan, Medieval knights and even the Tin Man as some of his sources. "Fiber Of My Being" is a two person show featuring new paintings by Anne Canfield and site specific installations by Ana Hernandez.

Anne Canfields imagery is founded out of two worlds; one real and one imagined, meeting somewhere in between. In her paintings she uses representation and symbolism to voice a story or create a portrait. She explores a sense of being, time and of place as each piece is remnant from personal experiences, travels and daydreams.

For Ana Hernandez the female body interweaves with the environment around her to materialize ideas of transplantation and adaptation. These connections take form in a discipline of colors and simple materials which are recontextualized and brought to a greater importance through volume and the insistence of repetition.

Ellie Brown Interview

We recently met up with Ellie Brown to discuss her current solo exhibition, A Chronicle of Lovers which is on exhibit in New York from September 23, 2009 to December 5, 2009.

The Chronicle of Lovers project was started in homage to each of the men the artist has slept with. Each man has a book and a digital print of the book in his name. The books are based on her impressions, memories and experiences with each man, regardless of whether the experience was positive or negative. She has contacted the men she’s still in touch with to share her altered book version of their affair. The artist stresses that each book is an earnest evaluation of her memories and not in any way meant to degrade, attack, or humiliate the men. Organized by Alexander Campos, Executive Director.

NEXUS values artist members who are dynamic, willing to take risks, dedicated to their work and enjoy being part of a community of artists. My Face in Your Space is the gallery equivalent of facebook: selected artists created portraits of friends and acquaintances with the agreement that their portraitees would reciprocate and create portraits of the artist. Once these portraitees are in the network, they may create portraits of whomever they like under the same agreement. Through October 2.
