Michael Ryan

Michael Ryan is an oil painter living in San Francisco, CA. After attending art school, Michael began freelancing and showing in galleries. With classical and contemporary influences, Ryan's paintings and drawings are predominantly allegorical.

"I've always been attracted to the allegory and the limitless possibilities that are contained in it; the openness and mystery to everyone else, usually myself included is amazing, and I want to realistically depict those abstract thoughts."

Karl Bielik

Karl Bielik has exhibited in his hometown of London as well as in Prague, Lisbon and New York.

Bielik’s multilayered paintings offer simple visual puns alongside extracts of dark and upbeat stories. Deliberate marks, carefully selected materials and specific texts lie behind these melodic works paying homage to the influences of Cohen, Carver, Schnabel, Rothko and Schwitters. These large scale visceral and lyrical musings on daily life are tinged with initial contradictions and disassociated themes, on closer inspection the partially hidden elements reveal further possible dialogues and extracts from personal experiences. Textiles, spray paint, oils, household gloss, text and photocopies are a few of the elements that sit together with found ephemera in these vacuum-packed, refined, albeit urban paintings.

Randy Barnes

Randy Barnes was born in Missouri in 1950. After a stint in the Marine Corps, he entered the University of Missouri, then went on to the University of Kansas for further study in literature and poetics. Randy pursued the life of a poet/musician for many years and painted landscapes as time permitted. In 2000, Randy began painting abstracts in earnest full-time. Most recent shows were at the Blue Heron Gallery on Vashon Island and at the St. Louis World Trade Center.

Artist's statement: Things come at me in fragments. I never see beforehand a whole entity. A flare of light, an obscure form, a movement that draws my eye into it but then, in an instant, disappears, leaving only an impression in my mind. Each thing begins with a series of pieces, imaginary, remembered, found, not yet found, invented by chance encounters. These things conjured from an immediate past or from the immediate present come into being as forms of tension, of solitude, of fear, of risk, of confusion. I throw them into the chasm, one by one, and then the construction begins.

This darkness then demands that I somehow find the right amount of light to find my way through. All the technique one can conjure is of no use here. The trap is in the trick. Everyone who attempts this foolishness finds very quickly just how vulnerable they really are. Explanations, descriptions, polemics, categorizations, handles, are intellectual pursuits to make of these things an identity that the non-participant can get his or her mind around and be able to convince himself that this thing is a definable creation--complete with bells and whistles--that instructs, that comforts, that interacts with a notion that it actually means something.

Sometimes the war rages for months. Sometimes the destination is arrived at quite soon. How am I to know, when first blood is drawn, where I’m going or what I’ll have to do in order to construct the thing or, to put it more precisely, to aid as an outsider an emergence of form unknown to me?

Hervie Syan

Originally from the UK, Hervie Syan is a pianist who lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan. Hervie has established himself as a unique and diverse musician. As a solo concert pianist, Hervie has given many recitals improvising a fusion of Jazz, Indian, and contemporary classical styles as well as a more traditional repertoire.

Having toured throughout England and Canada, performing in Taiwan has given Syan another layer to his music. “I am interested in the Taoist principle of wu wei found in martial arts here in Asia whereby intuitive spontaneous action (correct action) unfolds naturally by emptying the mind of thought and conflict – a principle that I am applying to my music making.” Syan is currently researching Tao philosophy in Taiwan in preparation for a future book consisting of essays on philosophy and music. He believes in the bringing together of different cultures and artistic mediums through compassion. Syan is currently working on his second CD as well as developing his new record label, ‘ynsarecords’. His first album, ‘an equality between expressions’, was released in 2003, and is a staggering artistic achievement in modern piano music. In February, Syan performed in Denmark. He opened an arts festival at the Vanlose Culture House in Copenhagen by performing a Gandhian based concert of piano music and multi-media. Two Gandhian inspired music making workshops were held by Syan at the Vanlose Culture House and the Danish Union of Musicians.

Kim McCarthy

Kim McCarthy was born and raised in Washington State. Growing up in the sticks and later living in the city, she developed a taste for urban street art such as wheat pasted posters and flyers, stickers, stencils, murals and spray painted graffiti. Meeting new friends and seeing many bands, the "underground" and "outsider" art became part of her life. Having her first solo art show at the age of sixteen gave a new meaning to being an artist, selling almost all her paintings, she realized the potential in becoming a professional artist. Using mainly spray paint, stencils and ink as mediums she would create images on almost any paintable surface she could find. Later, learning how to silkscreen her stencils she started making and selling clothing online and at street fairs. She moved to the Oregon coast about six years ago and since, Kim has had some great creative forces working with her. She has had numerous solo and group exhibits throughout Washington and Oregon. Using the same mediums, having a short attention span, plenty of ideas and learning new techniques, she has created many products such as clothing, housewares, paintings, prints, sculptures and toys.

Kim writes Art Gallery reviews for the Astoria Review Magazine, which covers Art and Events around the Pacific Northwest.
