Eco-Libris Q&A

Eco-Libris is a green business that works with book readers, publishers, authors, bookstores, and others in the book industry to balance out the paper used for books by planting trees. Millions of trees are cut down annually for virgin paper used for the production of books sold worldwide. Eco-Libris wants to raise awareness to the environmental impacts of using paper for the production of books and provide people and businesses with an affordable and easy way to do something about it: plant one tree for every book they read, sell or publish. Check out our Q&A with Raz, CEO and co-founder of Eco-Libris.

The Work of Erin Broadhurst and Lauren DiMemmo

Mew Gallery Presents: The Work of Erin Broadhurst and Lauren DiMemmo
http://www.mewgallery.org/

April 26 - June 6, 2008
Opening Reception 4/26/8 from 5 to 9 PM
Mew Gallery 906 Christian Street Philadelphia PA
This series of works is a collaboration with my other half, a 4 1/2 year old black lab.Napali has worked diligently over the past several months to destroy my most prized possessions: vintage heels. This is an ode to my dog, and a memoir of love lost. -Erin Broadhurst
I can't explain what I create. When I put my pen to my paper the images inside my head start to unfold. I'm attracted to complicated images with intricate patterns. I use the same ideas in my work. For most people you either love it or hate it. I'm not trying to change the world or give a meaning to my art that isn't there. It's simply visually stimulating art that I love to create.- Lauren DiMemmo

Antonio Guerrero

Antonio Guerrero is a contemporary Cuban artist. He was born in 1968 in Matanzas, Cuba, under the Castro regime. There he grew up in a household where artistic expression was appreciated and encouraged. Although materials were not always available, his dreams and ideas were always abundant.

In 1986 he was drafted into the army and was immediately transported to Africa to fight in the Ethiopian War. Although he longed for his homeland, he found himself inspired by the people and scenes of Africa. There he developed an interest in modern expressionism. He began to experiment with modern forms of visual art.

Guerrero returned to Cuba in 1988 where he resumed his job as an artisan. His talents include painting, engraving, woodcarving, sculpting and metal work. Feeling inhibited by Cuba’s government, and unhappy with the increasingly worsening living conditions, Guerrero decided to broaden his horizons by fleeing Cuba. In April of 1992, Guerrero, along with two other men, climbed into a raft they had secretly designed and built, and floated off from the coast of Matanzas. They were at sea five days before they were rescued and brought to the U.S.

In January, of 1995, Guerrero’s “Balseros del 92”, (“The Rafters of 92”) was exhibited at Vanidades Gallery, in Miami, FL. This painting was part of a collection of works donated to the Jose Marti Foundation to raise money for Florida International University student scholarships. This portrait of himself along with his cousin and friend fleeing from Cuba was said to best commemorate the occasion.

On May 17, 1996,Guerrero’s work was exhibited by US Rep Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in Washington D.C. as part of the “Cubans in Exile” exhibit.
During the time he has resided in the U.S., Guerrero has encountered many hardships. However, these hardships, he feels, have led him to discover new ideas for a new beginning. His time here has allowed him to explore new means of self-expression.

Guerrero's subject matter is based on the episodes and emotional stages of he has encountered in his life. The assortment of media he uses reflects an expressionistic style. He paints with acrylics as well as oils. He explores line design with pencils and uses mixed media to create montages. http://www.guerreroart.com/

Jonathan K. Slingluff

Jonathan's Statement: In recent years these somewhat, monochromatic paintings have turned into a "scrapbook" or tactile journey of my life filling in the voids where photos lack. Recreating memories of my past by means of paint on surface. These paintings try to embrace the underlying feeling that people often misconstrue as "the dead" of winter. The simple, lifeless trees and barren landscapes whimsically forge a byway through the oft-neglected path of one's perception of the bleak, sodden, and mundane northeastern winter. My attempt to condense the landscape into a simpler, shallow body of space by the most synthetic means possible. The reduction of forms found in the "typical" landscape, such as: mountains, grass, water, and what have you, turns into a graphic icon in the primary way by which I translate onto these paintings. Recognizable images and comfortable colors slowly guide the viewer though the painting.

"Like a filling side dish of epic tidbits, Jonathan Slingluff creates his work out of a mixture of tasteful restraint and skaterish bravura. The subject, generally nature-related, becomes an emblematically crystallized image in Slingluff’s work as he reduces the expanse of an ocean to one captivating line or stylizes a forest into a graphic textile pattern. Slingluff’s work is a treat for the viewer looking more for eye sushi than eye candy." Steve Linden, Visual Mixology

James Weaver

James Weaver, of Aptos, CA, creates collages, constructing them from his collection of billboard tatters and various papers. Each work is an abstract interpretation of how billboards were, and are today, constructed. In the past, dot images were silkscreened onto large pieces of paper, overlapped and then pasted onto the billboard metal backing. These days, computer-generated images are printed directly onto large weatherproof curtains and are hung with ropes to cover entire fronts of buildings.

James has produced and exhibited his mostly Abstract art since the 1970's, both inside and outside this country. Before retiring in 2007, he taught a variety of lectures and hands-on art studio classes at both Truckee Meadows College and Western Nevada College.
